An exciting opportunity has arisen for two enthusiastic and motivated senior trainees (ST4 +) with an interest in leadership, management and quality improvement to join Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust as Chief Registrars (one registrar to be based at each site).
The Chief Registrar role provides higher specialty trainees with at least 40%-50% protected time to develop skills and confidence in leadership, management and quality improvement and 50%-60% time within a clinical setting.
Learning that Chief Registrars gain from the Royal College of Physicians’ (RCP’s) bespoke development programme will be put into practice in a supported environment that provides autonomy, flexibility and support to develop projects that address key local challenges and priorities.
Projects may include service improvement and development, engagement and morale and education and training and will be tailored to the Chief Registrar’s interests as well as the needs of the Trust. All projects will have patient safety and the delivery of high-quality care at their core.
Main duties of the job
The Chief Registrars will be mentored by a senior clinical leader within the Trust and will gain a unique insight into leadership and management processes, as well as deeper knowledge of the NHS. They will benefit from a flexible training model that will enable them to develop a portfolio of experience and skills that will benefit future consultant posts and leadership roles and build a profile that will mark them out as a future clinical leader.
The Chief Registrars will have the opportunity to attend modules delivered as part of the RCP’s bespoke development programme. These will cover, for example, change management, team culture and development, quality improvement, leadership, influencing and personal resilience. The programme runs from September 2025 to June 2026 and will comprise of five 2-day modules that you will be expected to attend.

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) is the main provider of acute hospital services for around half a million people in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and mid Wales.
Encompassing some of the most picturesque parts of England and Wales, the Trust’s catchment stretches from the Cambrian Mountains in the west, to Newport and the fringes of the Black Country in the east. Our main service locations are the Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) in Telford and the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) in Shrewsbury which are located 20 minutes’ drive apart. Together they provide 99% of our activity. Both hospitals provide a wide range of acute hospital services including accident & emergency, outpatients, diagnostics, inpatient medical care and critical care.
