Job overview

Due to new funding we have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Speech & Language Therapist/s to develop the critical care service across both Royal Shrewsbury (RSH) and Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) sites. We have 1.2 WTE roles available and can support part time working. The current critical care units are comprised of 8 ITU and 6 HDU beds at the RSH site, and 6 ITU and 5 HDU beds at the PRH site. The case mix of the RSH Unit is slightly more surgical than the average District General Hospital Critical Care unit, as the majority of major elective and emergency surgical admissions occur on the Shrewsbury site. The case mix of the PRH Unit is slightly more medical than the average DGH Critical Care unit, due to the absence of emergency general surgical admissions at Telford. As part of the Trust’s Hospital Transformation Programme, the Critical Care Unit eventually will be solely situated at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, with all emergency and acute services.

This post will join other Allied Health Professionals already working on the critical care unit including Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Dietitians, assistants and a tracheostomy practitioner.  This post will support the development of patient clinical pathways as part of the MDT and keep abreast with latest evidence based practice. The post holder/s will be expected to drive service development for Speech and Language Therapy and support more junior staff to develop their clinical expertise in this area. The post holder will have clinical experience in critical care and of successful implementation of service improvement in previous roles. Development of specific clinical competencies e.g. tracheostomy can be supported for the right candidate if required. This role will be supported with their clinical learning and development by our new Band 8a Instrumental Assessment & Complex Dysphagia SLT.

Main duties of the job

To lead and provide expert SLT care to patient in Critical Care units and to follow patients onto the ward as appropriate. To provide swallowing and communication assessment for all patients with a new tracheostomy, including those who are mechanically ventilated, as per GPICS standards To provide timely assessment of all critically ill patients who have communication and/or swallowing difficulties as per GPICS standards To provide support and education to colleagues both within and outside of the unit. To demonstrate evidence of clinical expertise in this field and working to evidence based practice
