Job overview

We are looking for an experienced Therapy Assistant to join our Macmillan Integrated Therapy Service providing advice/ treatment and support to patients and families of those who have been diagnosed with cancer with complex needs. 

The team has representatives of Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Dietitians and Speech and Language Therapists and the post holder will join another part time Assistant Practitioner in the same role.

The post holder may be required to work across the two main hospital sites of The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford and visit patients in their own homes to issue or check equipment or to review their status following discharge home from the hospital.

Along with GCSE's in Maths and English at Grades 9 - 4 (or equivalent), the successful post holder must have previous therapy experience to bring to this role. 

Main duties of the job

As part of the Occupational and Physiotherapy clinicians the post holder will be doing some ward based clinical work aiding patients to rehabilitate and become as independent as possible whilst supporting them and families during often difficult times under the guidance of qualified therapists. There will be some telephone based interventions as well as supporting patients  at home or in an outpatient area. There is also the requirement to provide training and education to both patients and other colleagues.

The Macmillan Integrated Therapy Service is part of the main Therapy team working across both The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford.

The team is made up of 4 Therapy Professions and has 4 AP roles who manage their own caseload and run clinics with the support of the qualified therapists.

The team is employed by The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust but is adopted by Macmillan to provide services to patients with complex needs caused by their cancer or treatments.  The teams sits within the Care Closer to Home care group within the therapy team with a focus of supporting patients and families in the community as well as in hospital.

There is regular supervision and development opportunities particularly using the resources available to us as Macmillan professionals.

There is a Team co-ordinator and an Therapy Operational Manager who drives developments in line with Macmillan and changes in patients needs.
